David Smith
David Smith grew up in Queens, New York. He was held at the Vernon C. Bain Correctional Center, a jail barge in the Bronx nicknamed "The Boat," for one week before being sent to Rikers for three weeks. While at Rikers, he worked in the kitchen at night. Smith befriended the other men in his 15-person dorm, along with some of the correctional officers. On his last day at Rikers, jail officials paid him for his kitchen shifts and gave him a MetroCard, which he used to take the bus off the island. (Summary written by: Annie Anderson)
