Carole Eady-Porcher

Carole Eady-Porcher was raised in Charleston, South Carolina. At 18, she moved to New York City to escape her abusive friends and family and to pursue a career in singing. Soon after, she started dating a man who was also abusive, ultimately leading them into depression and addiction. Carole has been to Rikers Island three times, one of those times while homeless and pregnant with her second child. When describing what giving birth was like while on Rikers she says, “I was in labor and was in this paddywagon, and I had no way of holding myself…And then when I gave birth to my child, the…officer was there watching my child being born. They still kept me shackled even though I was given a spinal tap and I couldn't walk.” (Summary written by: Anne Lacy)
