Dawnn Miller
Dawnn Miller grew up in Brooklyn, New York. Miller was incarcerated for five months at Rikers Island in late 2019 and early 2020. It was her first ever incarceration, and she cried everyday. During visits, she had to wear flip flops and an oversize suit with nothing underneath it. She was at Rikers when COVID-19 first hit the facility in early 2020. She was likely infected with the virus, as she experienced a fever for two weeks, chills, and asmtha attacks. She recounts the inadequate medical attention she received, as staff refused to let her see a doctor. She describes Rikers as "nasty," with spit, urine, and feces covering the cells, walls, gates, and buses used to transport individuals to their court appearances. (Summary written by: Annie Anderson)
