Giselle Shortridge

Giselle Shortridge grew up in Queens, New York. As a transgender woman, she was housed with men during her first term at Rikers in 2017. She arrived at Rikers for her second term in mid-2020, amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. For this term, she was housed with women. Shortridge avoided the virus by staying in her cell for long stretches of time. She describes how the jail gave her a toothbrush, toothpaste, soap, and one roll of toilet paper, but few other hygiene products. She was bailed out by a transgender bail fund.
